The Ohio State Reformatory

Updated: Jun 23, 2020

If you have seen The Shawshank Redemption, you have seen The Ohio State Reformatory or Mansfield Reformatory as it is also called. It was a prison that was built in the late 1800's and ran until about 1990. During its time as a prison, problems arose of severe overcrowding and conditions that were considered inhumane. As with most prisons, this one also had a violent history. By the time of its closing at least 200 people had died within its walls, some of which were guards killed when prisoners attempted to escape.

Today, the prison is preserved by The Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society. Paranormal activity has been noticed throughout the prison by many who have visited. Physical contact has occurred between the paranormal and the living. Some people have reported being pushed, scratched and more by unknown sources. Cold spots, apparitions, doors slamming and more have been reported often at the reformatory. Tours are offered throughout the year, including ghost tours!
